Saudi Arabia, Oman, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Jordan, Bahrain, Kuwait, Iraq, Republic of Yemen, the Gulf, Gulf of Oman, Gulf of Aqaba, Gulf of Suez and the Suez Canal, Arabian Sea, Gulf of Aden and Red Sea bounded to the east by a line from Ras Asir (1150N 05110E) to a point (1600N 0600E0, Ras Mauri (2450N 06635E) Cyprus

it was backdated to recognise acts from the outbreak of the First World War

The criteria was not made retrospective

The Burma Star was awarded to British and Commonwealth forces who served in the Burma campaign between 11 December 1941 and 2 September 1945

presumably this was due to the cost of making individual bars with so many acts of gallantry being performed

these dates were filled in and consequently the appear as 'ghost dates' on the reverse of some medals
