This Evening』（2018年 / 日本未公開）の舞台となったアラバマ州ヘール郡で撮影された啓発的なカラー写真のシリーズで幕を開ける。それから、南部の視覚的表象を検証し、解体し、書き換える一連の写真作品やミクストメディア作品、文章へと続く。これらの作品の中にあり、この本の核となっているロスの映像作品『Return to Origin』（2021年）は、自らを4x8フィートの箱に入れて発送するという異色のコンセプチュアル作品である。これは、1849年に自由を求めて自らを箱詰めにして北部へ脱出したヘンリー・ブラウン（Henry Brown）に由来している。この作品でロスは、象徴的な意味から解き放たれ、その下にある大地、土、土壌、土地が姿を現した南部についての新たな視覚的物語を創造した。
