Paul Erhard began his bass/dance improvisation work with dancers in the University of Colorado Dance Department, in particular with instructor Chrissy Nelson. This laid a foundation for Paul’s Time Art Space Art collaboration with dancer Yali Rivlin. With Yali, Paul strives to connect musically with Yali’s movement, gestures and expressive moods. Scales reveal themselves, coming to life through rhythm and melodic phrases. For Yali, this improvised dance/music experience is a new experience. With his background in Modern dance, Yali was accustomed to training and performing to preexisting music, where choreographed or improvised movements coordinated with recorded or live performed musical compositions. With Paul, Yali’s dance is energized with the fresh new music emerging in response to and interacting with his movements, music that he in turn responds to in as an engaging dialogue unfolds between dance and music.
